Macie's Foundation for Children & Families Urges Congress to Update ADA for Inclusive Restrooms

Individuals with disabilities, including both children and adults, deserve the same equitable access to all community spaces as everyone else. Unfortunately, many public restroom facilities still fall short of providing necessary accommodations. Parents and caregivers of individuals with disabilities often face great challenges when it comes to using public restrooms due to the lack of inclusive and hygienic diaper changing facilities. This inadequacy not only affects children but also affects adults with disabilities who require similar accommodations.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was a landmark piece of legislation, paving the way for inclusivity and accessibility across the United States. However, it is time for an update, one that extends its reach to ensure that public restrooms are truly accommodating for everyone. In light of today’s standards and the growing awareness of the needs of individuals with disabilities, Congress should amend the ADA to mandate the provision of inclusive restrooms that cater specifically to children and adults who need these facilities.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 6 children in the U.S. has a developmental disability, which underscores the importance of such an amendment. Moreover, families often find themselves excluded from essential activities and experiences, solely because they cannot find adequate restroom facilities. This gap not only challenges their routine needs but also restricts their freedom and dignity, forcing them to face unnecessary barriers in everyday life.

Incorporating inclusive restrooms into public spaces is a tangible step toward a more accommodating and accepting society. These restrooms should be equipped with larger, adjustable height changing tables, sufficient space for caregivers, and proper sanitation facilities. Such changes would demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusivity, reaffirming the value placed on all members of our community, regardless of their physical capabilities.

Macie's Foundation for Children & Families calls on Congress to recognize the urgent need for this change. By signing this petition, you will help us amplify the voices of countless individuals and families who are impacted by the lack of inclusive restroom facilities. Your support can help bring about meaningful progress, ensuring that federal law aligns with the expectations of inclusivity and equity in today’s world. Together, we can advocate for a future that embraces and supports the needs of all individuals. Sign the petition to encourage Congress to update the ADA for truly inclusive restrooms.
